NFC Tags - Initial Set-Up

NFC tags let customers tap a physical tag with their phone to open a TrustistTransfer payment page.

This guide explains how to check your tags, set up a new tag, choose your NFC settings, and take a payment using NFC.

Before You Start

You will need:

  • A TrustistTransfer merchant account with NFC enabled
  • At least one TrustistTransfer NFC tag
  • Access to Settings in TrustistTransfer
  • An Android phone using Chrome if you need to scan and register a new tag

If you cannot see Tag Management or the NFC settings in your account, contact TrustistTransfer support.

Checking Your NFC Tags

  1. Sign in to your TrustistTransfer account.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Find the Tag Management section.

  4. Select View all tags.

You will see a list called My Tags. These are the active NFC tags linked to your account.

From this screen, you can:

  • Rename a tag using the pencil icon
  • Archive a tag using the bin icon
  • Set up a new tag using Set up a New Tag

Use clear tag names that match where the tag is used.

Examples:

  • Front Desk
  • Table 1
  • Bar Till
  • Reception
  • Main Counter

This makes it easier to choose the correct tag when taking a payment.

Ordering New Tags

If you need more NFC tags:

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Find Tag Management.

  3. Select Order new tags.

This will take you to the form for requesting new TrustistTransfer NFC tags.

Setting Up a New NFC Tag

Only use this section if the NFC tag has not already been added to your account.

To set up a new tag, you will need to use Chrome on an Android phone. If your browser does not support NFC scanning, TrustistTransfer will show a message asking you to use Chrome on Android.

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Find Tag Management.

  3. Select View all tags.

  4. Select Set up a New Tag.

  5. Select Start Scan.

  6. Hold the NFC tag close to your phone.

  7. Wait for TrustistTransfer to read the tag.

What Happens After Scanning a Tag

After scanning, TrustistTransfer will tell you what type of tag it has found.

The Tag Is Not a TrustistTransfer Tag

If you see a message saying the tag is not a TrustistTransfer tag, the tag cannot be used.

Use a TrustistTransfer NFC tag and select Try Again.

The Tag Belongs to Another Merchant

If the tag belongs to another merchant, you cannot add it to your account.

If you believe the tag should belong to your account, contact TrustistTransfer support.

The Tag Is Already Assigned to Your Account

If the tag is already assigned to your account, you do not need to add it again.

You can go back to the tag list and rename it if needed.

The Tag Is Not Yet Assigned

If the tag is not yet assigned, you can add it to your account.

  1. Enter a clear name in Tag Name.

  2. Leave Archived switched off if you want to use the tag now.

  3. Select Save Tag.

Once saved, the tag will be added to your account.

Archived Tags

Archived tags are tags that are linked to your account but are not currently in use.

You can view archived tags from Settings by selecting Archived tags in the Tag Management section.

Archive a tag if you no longer want it to appear as an active payment option.

Choosing Your NFC Payment Settings

After your tags have been added, go back to Settings and find Payment Customisation Settings.

These settings control which payment options appear when you take a payment.

Show Send to NFC

The Show Send to NFC setting controls whether NFC is shown as a main option on the payment screen.

If it is switched on, NFC options are shown when you take a payment.

If it is switched off, NFC may still be available under More ways to share.

This setting is only available if NFC tags are configured on your account.

Tap-to-Pay Auto NFC

The Tap-to-Pay (auto NFC) setting automatically assigns the open payment to your default NFC tag.

This is useful if you normally take payments from one fixed place, such as a counter, reception desk, or till.

When auto NFC is switched on, TrustistTransfer will prepare the payment on your default tag while the payment screen is open.

Default NFC Tag

If you have more than one active NFC tag, choose a Default NFC Tag.

This is the tag TrustistTransfer will use when Tap-to-Pay (auto NFC) is switched on.

If you only have one active tag, TrustistTransfer can use that tag automatically.

After changing these settings, select Save changes.

Manual NFC or Auto NFC?

Use manual NFC if you need to choose between different tags when taking a payment.

This is useful for:

  • Restaurants with multiple tables
  • Venues with more than one payment point
  • Staff who move between locations
  • Any business where the customer may need to tap a specific tag

Use auto NFC if most payments should go to the same tag.

This is useful for:

  • A main counter
  • A reception desk
  • A single till
  • One fixed point of payment

Taking a Payment with NFC

  1. Go to the main payment screen.

  2. Enter the amount you want to charge.

  3. Select Submit Payment.

  4. The payment screen will open with the usual QR code and PayLink options.

If auto NFC is enabled, you will see the NFC status on the payment screen.

It may show:

  • Preparing NFC
  • NFC ready on [tag name]
  • NFC not assigned

When it says the NFC is ready, the customer can tap the tag to open the payment page.

Sending a Payment to a Tag Manually

If auto NFC is not enabled, you can send the payment to a tag manually.

If you have one active tag, select Send to [tag name].

If you have more than one active tag:

  1. Select Assign to tag.

  2. Choose the tag you want to use.

  3. Ask the customer to tap that tag with their phone.

If the payment has already been assigned to a tag, you may see Change tag. Use this if you need to move the payment to a different NFC tag.

If You See an Overwrite Message

If a tag already has a payment assigned to it, TrustistTransfer may ask you to confirm before replacing it.

Only select Overwrite if you want the tag to open the new payment instead of the previous one.

Select Cancel if you are unsure.

Customer Payment Experience

Once the payment is assigned to the NFC tag, the customer taps the tag with an NFC-enabled phone.

Their phone will open the TrustistTransfer payment page.

The payment page will already show:

  • Your merchant name
  • The payment amount
  • The payment options available to the customer

The customer then completes the payment as normal.

Important

Keep the payment screen open while the customer is paying.

If you go back or close the payment screen before the payment is complete, the payment may be removed from the NFC tag.

If a Tag Shows “Waiting for Instruction”

If a customer taps a tag and sees a waiting message, it usually means there is no active payment currently assigned to that tag.

To fix this:

  1. Create the payment again.

  2. Assign it to the correct NFC tag.

  3. Ask the customer to tap the tag again.
